Leaf springs and suspension: reading the warning signs early

0

Suspension parts rarely fail without warning. On overloaded tippers and long-haul trucks the deterioration is slow and, if anyone is looking, easy to spot weeks before something breaks.

What overloading actually does

A leaf spring is designed to flex within a range. Load it past that range and the leaves take a permanent set — they stop returning to their original arch. Once the arch is gone, the axle sits closer to the bump stops, every pothole is transmitted into the chassis, and the remaining leaves carry loads they were never sized for.

Signs worth acting on

  • Flattened or reversed arch — compare left to right on level ground; a visible difference means the flatter side is already compromised
  • The vehicle sits low or leans when unladen
  • Cracked or shifted leaves — check around the centre bolt, where cracks usually start
  • Worn spring eye bushings — play here causes vague steering and uneven tyre wear
  • Broken or stretched U-bolts — these lose clamping force before they snap
  • Knocking over bumps that was not there before

Replace in sets, not singly

Fitting one new leaf into an old pack rarely works. The new leaf is stiffer than its neighbours, carries more than its share, and fails early. The same applies across an axle: replacing one side leaves the vehicle sitting unevenly and loads the new side harder.

Always renew U-bolts when a spring pack comes off. They stretch under torque and a re-used U-bolt will not hold the same clamping force.

Do not overlook the shock absorbers

Springs carry the load; shock absorbers control how the load settles. A dead shock lets the axle continue oscillating after every bump, which hammers the spring, the bushings and the tyres. Look for oil film on the body, and for a bounce that does not settle in one movement.

Related steering wear

Sloppy steering is often blamed on the box when the real cause is a worn tie rod end, king pin or drag link. These are inexpensive parts, and checking them is a five-minute job with a bar and a second person on the wheel.

We carry leaf springs, U-bolts, spring bushings, shackle pins, shock absorbers, tie rod ends and king pin kits for Leyland, Tata, Eicher and the common wheel loader models.
