Ordering the wrong component is the most expensive kind of delay: you pay for the part, you pay for the freight, and the machine still sits idle. A few minutes of identification up front avoids nearly all of it.
Start with the part number, not the description
Most components carry a cast or stamped number somewhere on the body. On filters it is usually printed on the canister; on brake shoes it is stamped into the shoe table; on injectors and pumps it is etched on the housing. That number is far more reliable than a description, because a single description such as “front brake shoe” can cover a dozen variants across model years.
If the original number is worn away, clean the surface with a wire brush and look again in raking light before giving up. Numbers are often still legible under grease.
Record the machine, not just the make
“Tata truck” is not enough to specify a part. What we need is:
- Make and full model designation (for example Tata 2518 C 6×4, not simply Tata)
- Engine model, where the part is engine-related
- Year of manufacture or chassis number
- Axle configuration for driveline and brake parts
For wheel loaders and batching plant, the plate on the machine frame carries the model and serial number. Photograph it once and keep the image on your phone — it saves the same trip every time you order.
Photograph the old part before removing it
Take a picture in place, then a second picture of the part on the bench next to a tape measure. Mounting orientation, the number of bolt holes and the spline count are all things that are obvious in a photograph and easy to get wrong in words.
Measure the things that matter
For a handful of families, dimensions decide the fit:
- Bearings and seals — inside diameter, outside diameter, width
- Hoses and pipes — bore, overall length, fitting type and thread
- Leaf springs — number of leaves, leaf width, eye-to-eye length
- Belts — profile and effective length
